Very impressive stuff. Testing in TX, NW, AZ.

But another large middle-class blue collar workforce in danger...

This is a lot of work to just not use freight trains

I work in the heavy duty trucking industry, and I think this tech is many years out. We are rolling out ADAS systems that are already standard on most passenger vehicles. Typically HD trucks lag about 5 years behind passenger cars, technology wise, so I wouldn’t count on this happening any time soon. We are prototyping self driving though so it i s, at least, inevitable.

Yeah, this will last until HAL plows one truck into another, or a school bus.

But how will they program them to stop, wait, and then pull out in front of traffic anyway?

For long stretches of highway and freight yards I can see where self driving trucks can be useful, but not so much in cities and industrial areas.

I am still planning on becoming a trucker soon, so maybe my boss will be a computer :P  Sit back and feel my ass grow.

It seems to me inevitable that there will be truckers waiting for the long-haul self-driving trucks to arrive via the highway , to steer them to their final destination.

Will be interesting to watch. I think the real key advancement  is inter-vehicle communication, which will be very challenging with all these disparate systems.

This is a very good question.

Truck platooning is another technology being worked out with very real MPG benefits, it will use inter-vehicle communication to coordinate truck positioning within the convoy. It should be a good proof of concept for more general inter-vehicle communication.
